DECEMBER 2024

From our Peace Runners 773 leadership team…

For the third year in a row, we co-hosted the Turkey Trot with The Garage Chicago and it was bigger and better than ever! We had 300 people join us for the event and raised almost $3,000 to support the Chicago Hope Academy track and field team and the Peace Runners 773 Youth Run Club. We thankful for the team at The Garage Chicago, DJ Skoli, and all our volunteers for helping make this an incredible event!

Runner of the Month: Kojo

How has Peace Runners 773 impacted you and the community? "I hate running". These are words I'd said many times over before Peace Runners instilled the habit in me. I was not a fast runner by any means (I still am not but I'm a lot faster than when I started) but I never felt left behind while running with Peace Runners and they always challenged me to push myself. They encouraged me to run in the 2023 Shamrock Shuffle and that was the first race I'd ever run in my life. Fast forward many miles and races later, I just completed my first ever marathon. This is crazy to me because I'd never even dreamed of running a marathon but I made it through with the encouragement, support and training by Peace Runners. My health has improved a lot, I've shed some excess pounds and gained some quality friends along the way. I've got a new love for the city through running thanks to Peace Runners. Their energy is so infectious and I especially feel the love in their community and all around the city when people shout "Go Peace Runners" and honk their horns when they see us run by. I'm thankful for the leadership and everyone that contributes to this great culture that we have.

How do you prioritize your physical and mental wellbeing? Going for a walk in the morning when I wake up is a non-negotiable. I think it's important to get some sunlight on your face early in the morning and throughout the day to help with your circadian rhythm. I also take frequent walks throughout the day in addition to running, strength training, boxing and yoga. All these also contribute tremendously to my mental wellbeing.

What’s your favorite way to be active? Absolutely running lol. I also really enjoy going on walks and I'm working on being more consistent with strength training.

What’s your “pump-up” song? It changes a lot but anything Afrobeats or Amapiano will get me pumped up. Also some anime soundtracks are on the run playlist because I'm such a nerd haha.
